Bookseer A reading

For someone who has just left a job of nine years

Nine years is long enough for the work to have done something to the shape of your days. You knew which meetings mattered and which did not. You knew who to ask. That knowledge is worth nothing now, and its worthlessness is the first thing you feel in the morning, before you are properly awake.

What is strange is that nobody warned you about the middle. The leaving was dramatic and the next thing will be dramatic, and between them lies a long flat stretch where you are not the person you were and not yet anyone else. People will ask what you are doing next. You will hear yourself giving an answer with more certainty than you have.

These three do not tell you what to do next. Two of them refuse the question outright.

Transitions

William Bridges · 1980

Bridges makes one distinction and it does most of the work: change is the event, transition is what happens inside you afterwards, and the second takes far longer than anyone budgets for. He gives the flat stretch a name, the neutral zone, and puts the whole of the work there rather than in whatever comes after it. Read it early, while you still think the emptiness is a problem to be solved by Tuesday.

The Remains of the Day

Kazuo Ishiguro · 1989

Stevens the butler, on a motoring holiday he does not enjoy, explaining to himself over six days why a life given entirely to a role was the correct life. He cannot see what it cost him. You can, from the first page, and that gap is the whole gift of the book: devotion and self-erasure watched from outside while they are still warm. You will argue with him. The argument is the point.

Pilgrim at Tinker Creek

Annie Dillard · 1974

Because after nine years of being useful you have forgotten how to look at anything that has no use. Dillard spends a year watching a creek in Virginia with the ferocity most people keep for their careers, and the famous page in it is a frog collapsing into its own skin while a water bug drinks it from underneath. She stood there and watched. That is the whole method, and it works on the part of you that currently mistakes rest for waste.
